I am most notably known as being Animals as Leaders Drummer since 2012. You may have first seen me on Gospel Chops or Berklee Chops or maybe just from the video I have been posting on here for the last 15 or so years. I have been playing drums for the last 26 years and can't imagine ever stopping. I enjoy making quality content for you guys that has zero edited drums and is all one take. I also have an educational website that I pour a lot of time and heart into so be sure to check that out as well.

Thanks to everyone who has bought Mastering Time 3 and to those who will! I hope you enjoy some of these other ideas I had, perhaps they will inspire some new jams over the inversion loop for you:) Video: Branndon Center Drums Mixed by: Trent Woodman
Mastering Time Open Jam 3

As part of the Mastering Time 3 lesson series, I wanted to show how musicians can communicate without knowing what the others will play. These completely improvised and open jams helps us develop our sense of intuition in music and often requires us to put the music above our own attachments. It is inspiring to play with cats that put the music above their own desires and seem to become one wit...

it's insane MG ... awesome!!!
drop the routine cuh im tryna get swole
I listen to this, almost every day while I'm at work!
What level do I need to be to start his classes? I use an electric kit since I'm new to drumming and have to change houses every year for now.
Here is a list of my lessons from easy to real hard: Single Pedal lesson Kit Mobility Pack Ghost Note Lesson Linear Lesson Universal Function Mastering Time 1 Mastering Time 2 Ultimate Double Bass Lesson Mastering Time 3 Hope this helps!
@@drummusician Thanks so much Matt! I'll be following this list.
worship
Number 2 , much tighter, clearer defined expression, and it led the listener all the way down and through the rabbit hole to the exit.
MORE OF THIS!
Every single time I hear 19:00 I grow weak in my knees... even while siitting... he's literally a magician
You're Mad brother 😅👏🔥
0:30 your right hand (or left hand, if you play on a left handed kit) isn’t playing with underhand grip because your kit is already oriented to the right. Your toms descend to the right, so your right hand is able to comfortably move around the kit with an overhand grip. I play matched grip too, I just thought I’d chime in on that one point. On an unrelated note, how large are your hi hats?
Buddy Rich actually talked me out of it. I watched an interview with him where he said “you really can’t move around the kit with matched grip” or something like that and then proceeded to do a drum solo that I was able to do (much slower, but that’s just because he’s Buddy Rich) with matched grip. There may be some ergonomic sense in learning traditional grip, but it’s like learning how to drive stick, you’ll never really need it.
Ehhh I've seen better....by Matt in future videos
Who writes the music that goes along with these drum patterns...AI? I think Matt might be the alien we captured from Roswell back in the 40s. Just out here wearing a skin suit.
When people call me an amazing drummer I always tell them they have no clue what a good drummer is and then when I show them shit like this they never like it because it's "too difficult to follow".
So glad I found this dude 🤘
Difficulty 10
coming back to this after seeing your vids from recent tours. still just as amazing back then.
First - Matt is a ludicrously great drummer! And he’s got a valid point, in most scenarios a matched grip is the way to go. But there’s one scenario where I find traditional to have an advantage. It’s in small combo scenarios where I need to get LH comping patterns to be quick / quiet. It just feels a fit easier to drop the stick and pick it up, using the thumb as the lever to get rebound. You can really get fast, consistent, quiet notes with little effort when you dial that in. Moving the thumb is a small motion, and that smaller motion can be an advantage. But is it a huge advantage? No, but it has a few merits. I met Bill Stewart once and asked him if there’s any reason I should keep playing trad grip, and he said the only thing it’s got is a certain low volume advantage and it looks cool, haha. He said if he had Morello’s hands, he’d play trad, but anyone else should play matched.
Him clearing his throat at 0:40 sounds like the beginning to Lippincott
This is what mastery on the drums sounds and looks like, kids!
thanks for sharing, Matt! this is insane and so inspirational in the same time :)
Great work!
mmmffgh
Yes LFG there's good there's great then there are those at the very front pushing the progression of modern drumming... and this guy is at the front 😳
Htf does he remember all this??
Snare sounds great toms just sound okay to my ear
I like speed metal!👍🏻
Besides the highly technical content, I really dig the tune and solo, they don't sound "mathematical" to me, but rather quite pleasant. It would be nice seeing Matt playing with someone like Tigran Hamasyan someday...
Amazing stuff! What the hell happened at 3:10... I can't even understand that!
That Rosie o donnell on bass? Dayum
I showed my girlfriend this and she said, but you can’t even dance to it. I’m gonna miss her.
When people ask me why you practice all the time?I’m just gonna start showing them this
2:18 to 2:31. Total insanity. It gets me every f*ckin' time. WTF Matt?!!!
I love these older videos. The energy was so raw fresh on the gig!
waiting for it on tidal...
3:42-3:46 only part I can play
i dont know whats harder to do for the band 1. Matt garstka playing a solo 2. The rest of the band trying to keep the timing and pace of the song while matt is doing whatever he is doing behind
Toshiro Mifune - Yojimbo/Sanjuro vibes with the hair and overall stance/appearance.
3:40
You are such an amazing drummer
I just played this video on mute with the album version playing and I got chills. Took me a min to match them up. Yes I know these days with click tracks and software its not as amazing as matching up a live vid from the 90s but its still awesome. Garstka is a groove robot.
The meter seems to move back and forth from odd to even to odd count meters. From what I can tell, from 5 to 6, back to 5 again etc etc. Sound is impeccable, and it’s scary to see Matt move so smoothly across meters.
Holy shit yes more Aesop please! Fucking rhythmic genius, the both of y’all. What a satisfying combination 💥
Technique appeals to emotion. Writing applies to context.
Oh OK! I know now😮 I’ll never miss another Animals tour👈🏿
You know an album is going to be good when matt says its sick as fuck and now im a total fan of lang and the resonance project
What time signature do you shake your shake in?
Daikon is actually a white radish that is also frequently pickled, brother man 😉 all delicious. I've rarely met a pickled vegi I didn't like. Dude those militant vegan are wild tho lol. Wild, and super off-putting.
Im a huge AAL fan, but I wonder what they would sound like NOW if Chebon Littlefield came back on bass. I watched a Matt G. Cribs where he was like, Why cant AAL have a singer? and Im thinking Why cant AAL have a bass player!!! Such a great band, though. Love and kudos to Tosin, Javier and Matty G!
this should def have more views! Wtf!
